ARTIST'S COMMENTARY (continued)

My first trip to Peru had lasted two months and I had covered a lot of ground. Three months later I was in Mexico visiting areas I had traveled in many times previously. I continued the series, and began making more mountain studies in the mountains to the West of Oaxaca City, the capital of Oaxaca State.
These mountains are known as the "Sierra Mixteca". They are populated by the Mixtec people, a group which still lives quite independantly of modern culture and the economics of Oaxaca City.
I have been partial to the weavings which come out of this area since I first saw them, in the early eighties.
The only transportation into the region, where I was interesred in going to purchase some "serapes", was standing in the back of a cargo truck, bouncing over hours of bumpy roads. This type of transportation was ideal for taking in views of the extensive Oaxacan Sierra, but extremely uncomfortable and exposed to the weather.
