This yellow pasture, drenched in sunlight, and backed by receeding blue hills is one of the first studies from my passage through Columbia.
The Andes are not as high this far North, at the end of the Cordillera. The lands of Columbia are especially beautiful. The mountains and small farms reminded me of my native Vermont, only tropical.
Unfortunately this pastoral and picturesque country has been war-torn for many decades. This painting was made during my passage South, at the beginning of my second trip to South America. When I returned North, through Columbia, five months later, my bus was detained for a day, as we waited for the military to clear the road ahead of mines.
The insurgency involved is known as the F.A.R.C., a ruthless army of neo-marxists, known for assasinations and kidnappings.
