ARTIST'S COMMENTARY (continued)

While in Cuzco, the legendary capital of the vast Inca empire, I was kept busy filling the little sketch books which I purchased in Peru. I made many portraits and drawings of local people, along with sketches at the ruins sites and also filled some books with drawings made at the various museums. These included designs copied from ancient weavings and ceramic pottery, sketches of figuratve sculpture, and even some drawings of Incan mummies.
I collected a trove of visual information, potentially useful in artworks still to come. The artist's practice of traveling and collecting sketches to be used in later compositions was done famously by Leonardo when he visited the Alps, and by Gauguin, on his trip to Martinique.
