"Death"
oil on canvas, 16.25 x 15.75 inches
SEPTEMBER 12, 2001
"During the day after the attacks the news kept returning to rescue efforts being carried out. Slowly the horrible reality of the number of deaths already having resulted from the building's demise began to creep in. Also, the realization that some were still dying, trapped in the rubble was terrible to think of. I thought of the color white as a symbol of death, a common association in traditional cultures, and made a painting that seemed to me to be as cold as a tomb".
